Founder Daniel Brass

Black Dog Running Company was established in 2012 by Daniel Brass, who recognized a gap in the specialty running store market in the greater Myrtle Beach area.

Leveraging his experience from managing a similar store in Virginia, Daniel used his deep knowledge and industry connections to develop a local presence from scratch. He introduced exclusive brands and formed a community of runners, enhancing the store’s footprint through training groups and events.

Over the years, Daniel expanded the team and enriched the store with special events, charitable efforts, and local partnerships, eventually relocating the business to Market Common’s outskirts. Despite many businesses struggling during the 2020 pandemic, the outdoor fitness sector, including Black Dog Running Company, saw significant growth. This surge led to a move to a larger location within the same area.

In 2021, Daniel appointed the store’s first two managers, Kelly Burton and Diane Whitman. Kelly, who joined in 2019, brought expertise in marketing, networking, event planning, and software. Diane, who came on board in 2020, offered a strong background in teaching, coaching, and managing staff. Together, they co-hosted “Rungry,” a YouTube show where they shared their first marathon training experiences, event highlights, shoe reviews, and running tips. Their efforts revitalized Black Dog’s brand, making it a central hub for runners of all ages and fitness levels.

In 2022, Daniel opened a second location, Black Dog Outfitters, in downtown Conway, which he continues to own independently of Black Dog Running Company. By 2024, he sold Black Dog Running Company to Kelly and Diane, who now operate under Sisters Running LLC. They are thrilled to continue serving the active communities in Horry and Georgetown counties and beyond.
